In the late spring of 2017, the community of Wallingford, Connecticut, was struck by the tragic loss of Luc John Pentz-Tholenaar, a 30-year-old Caucasian male. His life, marked by academic and athletic achievements, came to a sorrowful end on May 27, 2017. An alumnus of Choate Rosemary Hall, where he graduated with honors, and Quinnipiac University, where he earned his bachelor's and MBA, Luc was a man of many talents and passions.
He was an avid athlete, excelling in swimming, tennis, running, cycling, skiing, and as a coxswain. His commitment to his community was evident through his efforts in revitalizing the Wallingford Community Gardens and reinvigorating the Hartford Masters Crew Team. He also dedicated his time to coaching special needs and other athletes in swimming at his alma mater, Choate.
The circumstances leading to his death began to unfold when he was reported missing on a Monday evening after not being heard from for over 24 hours. The last known communication from him was a work email sent earlier that day. His vehicle, a BMW, was later discovered at the Tyler Mill Preserve on Northford Road. This prompted an extensive search of the vast and thickly wooded area by Wallingford and state police, which included the use of K9 units and a state police helicopter. The search concluded on Tuesday morning when his body was discovered within the preserve.
Subsequent investigation by the authorities determined that Luc John Pentz-Tholenaar’s death was the result of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. There was no indication of foul play, and consequently, no arrests were made nor were any suspects sought in connection with his death. His passing was a profound loss to his family, friends, and the communities he so actively served. He is remembered for his vibrant personality, his wide array of talents, and the positive impact he had on those who knew him. Funeral services were held in Clinton, followed by a memorial service at the Wallingford Community Garden, a place that stood as a testament to his dedication to community enrichment.
