On a tragic afternoon in Hartford, Connecticut, on December 5, 2018, the life of 17-year-old Karlonzo Taylor was cut short by gun violence. The young Black male was with friends inside an apartment building on Park Street when a gunman opened fire. Taylor was struck by the bullets and rushed to a local hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
Another teenager who was with him was also wounded in the shooting but survived.
The incident was not a random act of violence, but rather a tragic case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Investigators determined the shooting was an act of retaliation. The suspect, William Moore, had allegedly been robbed at the same location months earlier, in August 2018. Seeking revenge, Moore returned to the apartment building and fired at a group of people on the third floor, hitting Taylor and his friend. Friends, family, and even the suspect's mother stated that Taylor was not involved in the prior robbery. Known as a peaceful and smart young man who worked at the Hartford Public Library and dreamed of becoming a veterinarian, his death was a profound loss to the community.
The Hartford Police Department quickly identified William Moore, then 24, as the suspect. He was arrested the day after the shooting in Bristol. Moore was charged with murder and first-degree assault. In court, it was mentioned that Moore suffered from mental health issues, including paranoid schizophrenia. Ultimately, in March 2023, Moore pleaded guilty to murder and first-degree assault. He was subsequently sentenced to 25 years in prison, followed by 10 years of special parole for the senseless killing of Karlonzo Taylor and the wounding of the other teen.
