In the early hours of April 24, 2019, a tragic series of events unfolded in Hartford, Connecticut, culminating in the death of 16-year-old Felipe Lopez. A male resident of Windsor, Lopez was discovered inside a crashed vehicle on Albany Avenue shortly before 1 a.m. He had sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at a local hospital. At the time of his death, Lopez was a student at LP Wilson and was the father of a young child.
The investigation into Lopez's death quickly revealed that he had been targeted. Authorities determined that there were no bullet holes in the vehicle he was driving, leading them to believe the shots may have been fired from inside the car. A critical breakthrough in the case came from an examination of Lopez's cellphone. Investigators found a Facebook Messenger conversation arranging a meeting for a small marijuana transaction on Sigourney Street. The social media account used to set up the meeting was traced to Isaiah Benitez, 22, and the mother of his children.
Less than ten days after the fatal shooting, Hartford police arrested Isaiah Benitez and charged him with murder and carrying a pistol without a permit in connection with Felipe Lopez's death. During questioning, Benitez confessed that the planned drug deal had gone awry, and he admitted to shooting Lopez. After being shot in the chest, Lopez attempted to drive away but ultimately crashed his vehicle. At the time of his arrest for Lopez's murder, Benitez was already facing charges of attempted murder and assault from a separate double-shooting that had occurred in March. Benitez was held on a $1.5 million bond for the murder of Felipe Lopez. The arrest brought a measure of relief to Lopez's grieving family, who had made public pleas for justice.
