In the quiet evening of February 5, 2019, a tragedy unfolded that would forever alter a Bridgeport, Connecticut family. Sujata Lee Edward, a 36-year-old mother, was inside her William Street home, a place that should have been a sanctuary. A dispute had erupted outside earlier in the day, a conflict involving her son and his ex-girlfriend that had escalated to a physical altercation.
Though the initial fight had seemingly ended, a lingering sense of unease hung in the air.
Later that evening, as Sujata looked out a second-floor window to watch her daughter get into a car, the street outside her home became a scene of violence. A barrage of at least ten gunshots shattered the peace, and one of the bullets pierced through the window, striking Sujata in the torso. In an instant, a senseless act of violence stole her from her two teenage children and other family members who were also in the residence, including her 84-year-old grandmother. She was rushed to Bridgeport Hospital but tragically succumbed to her injuries.
The aftermath of Sujata's death left her family heartbroken and desperate for answers. Her mother, Llesa O'Connor, recounted the horrific moment she witnessed her daughter fall after being shot. The shooting was believed to be a targeted act of retaliation stemming from the earlier dispute. In the days following the shooting, the Bridgeport Police Chief expressed his outrage at the "total disregard for human life" and vowed that an arrest would be made quickly.
Despite the initial promises of a swift resolution, the case has grown cold. Although police investigated several leads, including stopping a vehicle with three men and firearms near the scene shortly after the incident, it was determined they were not connected to Sujata's murder. For years, Sujata's family has continued to plead for justice, periodically renewing their calls for the public's help in identifying the person or persons responsible for her death. As of the five-year anniversary of her passing in February 2024, no arrests have been made, and no suspects have been publicly named in the killing of Sujata Lee Edward. The case remains an open and painful chapter for a family still waiting for closure.
