In the early morning hours of February 22, 2020, a dispute that began inside Elizabeth's Bar and Restaurant in Bloomfield, Connecticut, tragically escalated, spilling out into the parking lot and ending the life of 42-year-old Franklin Arthur Kane Spencer, a Black male. Spencer and his brother, 43-year-old Aaron Lee Walker Sr., were fatally shot shortly after 1 a.m.
Bloomfield Police officers, whose station was located just across the street, heard the gunshots and were on the scene in less than a minute. They discovered both brothers on the ground with gunshot wounds. Walker had been shot in the chest and leg, while Spencer sustained two gunshot wounds to the head. Both men were rushed to a local hospital where they were pronounced dead.
The investigation into the double homicide quickly identified 44-year-old Russell Smith of Windsor, Connecticut, as the primary suspect. Smith fled the scene immediately after the shooting, sparking a five-and-a-half-month search. The manhunt, which involved the U.S. Marshals Violent Fugitive Task Force, concluded in August 2020 when Smith was apprehended in Georgia. He was then extradited back to Connecticut to face charges for the murders of the two brothers.
After a five-week trial, a Hartford Superior Court jury found Russell Smith guilty of the murder of Franklin Spencer in August 2024. However, the jury was unable to reach a unanimous verdict on the murder charge related to Aaron Walker's death, resulting in a mistrial for that count. On October 29, 2024, Smith was sentenced to 50 years in prison for Spencer's murder. In a separate hearing on the same day, Smith pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of first-degree manslaughter in connection with Walker's death and received a concurrent 20-year prison sentence, leading to a total effective sentence of 50 years.
