In the early morning hours of June 21, 2020, a young Hispanic/Latino man’s life was cut short in the parking lot of the Comfort Inn & Suites in Meriden, Connecticut. Giovanni Rodriguez, a 24-year-old male, was by his car when another vehicle slowly approached. From the passenger seat, a man opened fire, striking Rodriguez with multiple shots from a. 380 caliber semi-automatic handgun. Despite being mortally wounded, Rodriguez attempted to flee but collapsed in the entranceway of the hotel.
First responders arrived at the scene at approximately 1:52 a.m. to find him with a single gunshot wound to the chest, but their efforts to revive him were unsuccessful, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation into the shooting quickly pointed to a motive rooted in gang rivalry. Rodriguez was identified as a member of the Crips, and the man who shot him, Trevor Outlaw, was a member of the rival Bloods gang. An ongoing conflict between these two groups was determined to be the driving force behind the fatal encounter. Investigators learned that an associate had alerted Outlaw and an accomplice to Rodriguez's presence at the hotel. This information led to the targeted attack in the hotel parking lot.
Authorities identified 35-year-old Trevor Outlaw as the primary suspect in the murder. In August 2020, a 39-year-old woman named Cheenisa Rivera was arrested and charged with interfering with the investigation and hindering prosecution for her involvement. By February 2021, Outlaw himself was arrested and charged with murder, carrying a pistol without a permit, and criminal possession of a firearm. Outlaw had an extensive criminal history with multiple felony convictions, making it illegal for him to possess a firearm.
In February 2022, a jury found Trevor Outlaw guilty on all charges related to the murder of Giovanni Rodriguez. Subsequently, on June 7, 2022, a judge sentenced him to 65 years in prison for his crimes. The sentencing brought a close to the legal proceedings surrounding the violent death of Giovanni Rodriguez, a life ended in a burst of gunfire fueled by gang conflict.
