In the summer of 2020, a life full of promise was tragically cut short. Elijah Ortega, a 16-year-old Black male from Windsor Locks, Connecticut, was a rising star on his high school's varsity basketball team, known for his infectious smile and competitive spirit on the court. His life, however, came to a violent end on June 24, 2020, in a local park.
The events that led to his death began with a dispute that was supposed to be settled with a fistfight at Pesci Park.
Ortega's sister later recounted to police that her brother's ex-girlfriend, Sydney Witchard, had informed him that a man named Danny wanted to fight him at the park. Witchard drove Daniel Baez and two of his friends to the park, knowing a confrontation was planned. Witnesses stated that when the two parties met, Baez pulled a gun from a fanny pack. In a final, selfless act, Ortega yelled for everyone to run. As he turned to flee himself, Baez fired multiple shots, striking the teenager twice. Ortega was rushed to Hartford Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
In the wake of the shooting, the community mourned the loss of the young athlete. Friends, family, and teammates gathered for a vigil at Pesci Park, remembering a young man known for his silly, joyful nature. Meanwhile, law enforcement launched a manhunt for the suspect. Daniel Baez, 26, of Hartford, was identified as the shooter and a warrant was issued for his arrest. After nearly a month on the run, Baez was apprehended. Sydney Witchard was also arrested and charged with hindering prosecution for her role in driving Baez to and from the scene.
The legal process that followed brought some measure of justice for Ortega's family. In November 2023, a jury found Daniel Baez guilty of murder. Prosecutors argued that Baez had senselessly brought a gun to what was intended to be a fistfight. During the trial, it was revealed that the confrontation stemmed from an earlier chance encounter where Ortega had shouted at Baez. In January 2024, Baez was sentenced to 48 years in prison for the murder of Elijah Ortega, a sentence the State's Attorney hoped would bring some peace to a family who had endured a painful and arduous process.
