On the night of June 12, 2021, a young Black / African American man named Ivan Whyte, 23 years old, drove to the Marriott Residence Inn on Bridgeport Avenue in Shelton, Connecticut. He was there to meet with some acquaintances who were at a gathering in one of the hotel rooms. The evening took a tragic turn when, at approximately 11:30 p.m., police responded to a report of a man shot in the hotel's parking lot. Upon their arrival, they discovered Ivan Whyte deceased, having sustained multiple gunshot wounds. He was found in the back of the complex, near a vehicle he was believed to have been driving.

The investigation that followed was described as meticulous, involving the Shelton Detective Bureau, the Connecticut State Police Major Crime Squad, and the Stratford Police Department. Investigators determined that the individuals Whyte had gone to meet were not residents of Shelton. As they delved deeper into the case, detectives executed several search warrants and seized various items of evidentiary value. The investigation pressed on for months, leaving a grieving family in its wake, who publicly expressed their pain and their hope that the person responsible would be brought to justice.

Six months after the shooting, on December 22, 2021, a breakthrough in the case was announced. The Shelton police arrested a 16-year-old male from Ansonia in connection with Whyte's death. The suspect, later identified as Nashod Porter, was charged with murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and carrying a pistol without a permit. Initially taken to a juvenile detention facility, the decision was later made for Porter to be tried as an adult. He pleaded not guilty to the charges. As the legal process unfolded, Porter remained in custody, with police indicating that they anticipated making more arrests in the ongoing investigation. The motive for the shooting was not immediately clear to investigators, who did not believe it was a random act, but also did not think Whyte had been stalked to the hotel.
