On a summer night that should have been filled with celebration, the life of 15-year-old Zion Burton, a Black male from Bridgeport, Connecticut, was tragically cut short. On July 9, 2022, just days before his sixteenth birthday, Burton was attending a party at the Calvin United Church banquet hall on Kings Highway East in Fairfield. The hall had been rented for what was reported to be a large party with 150 to 200 people in attendance.
Around 10:30 p.m., a physical altercation broke out
at the gathering. In the midst of the chaos, a single gunshot was fired. The bullet struck Burton and also wounded a female victim in the jaw. When Fairfield police officers arrived on the scene, they found an unresponsive Burton and immediately began life-saving measures. He was rushed to St. Vincent's Medical Center, but he ultimately succumbed to his injuries. The female victim was also hospitalized but was later released. In the panic that ensued after the gunshot, three other individuals sustained minor injuries as they tried to flee the banquet hall.
In the immediate aftermath, the Fairfield Police Department, with assistance from the Connecticut State Police Western District Major Crimes Squad, launched an investigation into the homicide. Authorities stated that they believed the shooting was an isolated incident and that the suspect had known Zion Burton. The individual who fired the shot reportedly fled the scene immediately after the incident. Despite numerous leads and an ongoing investigation, there have been no public announcements regarding any arrests made or the identification of any suspects in the years following the shooting. The case remains an active investigation.
