In the early morning hours of November 5, 2022, the life of a 30-year-old Black/African American woman, Jashira Pagan, was irrevocably altered. Outside a condominium complex on West Thames Street in Norwich, Connecticut, an argument pierced the pre-dawn quiet, followed by the sound of a single gunshot. Responding to a 911 call around 5:30 a.m., police discovered Pagan on the ground with a gunshot wound to her head.
Rushed to a nearby hospital, Pagan fought for her life for two days.
She succumbed to her injuries on November 7, 2022. Investigators quickly began treating the case as a homicide, believing the shooting was a targeted act rather than a random incident of violence.
The investigation into Pagan's death led Norwich police to a suspect a month later. In December 2022, authorities arrested 22-year-old Atlantikh Balidemaj of Norwich in connection with the fatal shooting. Balidemaj was charged with murder and firearm-related offenses. He was held on a $5 million bond pending his court appearance.
