In the rural landscape of Grant County, Arkansas, on the first day of February in 1887, Deputy Constable John Bratton, a male, met an untimely and violent end. While on duty, he and Constable H.L. Smith were in the process of escorting a recently arrested individual to the local jail. In an act of apparent accommodation, the officers permitted the prisoner a stop at his own home to gather some personal effects before his incarceration.
