In the rural landscape of Grant County, Arkansas, on the first day of February in 1887, Deputy Constable John Bratton, a male, met an untimely and violent end. While on duty, he and Constable H.L. Smith were in the process of escorting a recently arrested individual to the local jail. In an act of apparent accommodation, the officers permitted the prisoner a stop at his own home to gather some personal effects before his incarceration.
This decision proved to be a fatal one.
Once inside the residence, the situation escalated rapidly as the man they had in custody made a desperate attempt to seize a firearm. In the ensuing struggle for control, Constable Smith was forced to shoot the man. However, the confrontation did not end there. The prisoner's brother, who was also present in the house, produced a weapon of his own and opened fire on the two lawmen. Both Deputy Constable Bratton and Constable H.L. Smith were shot and killed in the chaotic exchange.
