In the late winter of 1887, a dedicated lawman in Grant County, Arkansas, met a tragic and untimely end. Constable H. L. Smith, a male officer from Sheridan, was killed in the line of duty on the first of February. His death unfolded during what should have been a routine prisoner transport.
Constable Smith, accompanied by Deputy Constable John Bratton, had successfully arrested an individual and was in the process of escorting him to the local jail.
In an act of consideration, the officers allowed the prisoner to make a brief stop at his own home to gather some personal belongings before his incarceration. This decision, however, would prove to be fatal.
Once inside the residence, the situation rapidly deteriorated. The prisoner made a desperate attempt to seize a firearm, prompting Constable Smith to discharge his own weapon in self-defense, injuring the man. In the ensuing chaos, the prisoner's brother, who was also present in the house, produced a gun and opened fire on the two officers. Both Constable Smith and Deputy Constable Bratton were struck by the gunfire and succumbed to their injuries at the scene.
In the aftermath of the deadly altercation, both the original detainee and his brother were apprehended by authorities. They were subsequently charged with two counts of first-degree murder for the deaths of the two lawmen.
