In the late winter of 1887, a dedicated lawman in Grant County, Arkansas, met a tragic and untimely end. Constable H. L. Smith, a male officer from Sheridan, was killed in the line of duty on the first of February. His death unfolded during what should have been a routine prisoner transport.
