Samuel Abner Weaver, 41, male, White/Caucasian, served as the town marshal of England, Arkansas, when he was fatally shot on April 30, 1902. Earlier that month he had arrested a local physician, who was jailed for several days and nursed a grudge. On the day of the killing, the doctor confronted Weaver in town. When Weaver warned he would arrest him again, the man drew a pistol and shot him. Weaver, though mortally wounded, returned fire and struck his assailant, who died the following day.
Weaver died in the line of duty from gunfire on the streets of England in Lonoke County.
Records reflect that the assailant—the local physician Weaver had arrested ten days earlier—was the sole suspect. Because he succumbed to his wounds the next day, there were no subsequent arrests or prosecutions. Weaver was survived by his wife and seven children, and he was laid to rest in Hamilton Cemetery in Lonoke County.
