In the winter of 1949, the town of Marshall, Arkansas, lost its Sheriff, Doyle Smith, in a sudden act of violence. On Sunday, December 4th, Sheriff Smith was carrying out his duties in the business section of town when he confronted a man he had ordered to either leave Marshall or cease his drinking.
