On April 13, 2014, 24-year-old Lemen Arana was found critically injured in Little Rock, Arkansas. She had suffered a gunshot wound to the head and was discovered in the front seat of a car parked on Stanton Road. Her boyfriend, 25-year-old Juan Montalba, was found nearby, yelling in the street. He directed police to the vehicle where Arana was located. Montalba was initially arrested and charged with battery.
During a formal interview, Montalba waived his Miranda rights and told police that he accidentally shot Arana while poking her in the head with a pistol. However, as Arana was declared brain dead and her body was kept on life support to facilitate organ donation, the charges against Montalba were upgraded to first-degree murder.
Montalba was held on a $2.5 million bond at the Pulaski County Regional Detention Center. He later pleaded guilty to the charges and was sentenced to 45 years in prison for the death of his girlfriend.
Arana left behind three children, who were deeply affected by her tragic death. Her friend, Max Cabrera, expressed the profound impact of her loss, stating that it was 'heart wrenching for them.'
