In the summer of 2015, a quiet street in Conway, Arkansas, became the scene of a grim discovery that would unravel a story of betrayal and violence. On July 22, 2015, the bodies of 66-year-old Patricia Cogdell and her husband, Robert Cogdell, were found in a wooded area behind their home on Quail Run Circle. The couple, who had been married for 44 years, had both been shot to death.
The investigation into their deaths began after Robert, the Director of Public Works for the City of Maumelle, failed to show up for work, prompting concerned colleagues to request a welfare check.
The investigation quickly zeroed in on a shocking suspect: the couple's 14-year-old grandson, Justin Staton. Staton, whom the Cogdells had raised, was taken into custody and charged with two counts of capital murder. The case grew even more disturbing as three other teenagers were arrested in connection with the double homicide. Hunter Drexler, 17, was also charged with capital murder, while Connor Atchley, 17, and Anastasia Roberts, 17, faced charges of first-degree murder and theft by receiving.
