In the winter of 2017, the life of 26-year-old Heaven Lee Bolen was tragically cut short in Harrison, Arkansas. On the evening of January 22nd, she was discovered lying face down in the street outside her residence on West Prospect Street, suffering from a gunshot wound to the head. Despite being rushed to a hospital in Springfield, Missouri, the young mother succumbed to her injuries the following day, on January 23, 2017.
The investigation into the shooting quickly pointed to one
primary suspect: Heaven's estranged husband, 36-year-old Matthew Jay Bolen. Authorities believed that Matthew had intended to cause her further harm before the fatal shot was fired. Evidence found at the scene, including a 'kill bag' containing items such as duct tape and a knife, suggested a grim and premeditated plan. It is believed that Matthew handcuffed Heaven in an attempt to abduct her from her home. It appears she made a desperate attempt to escape before she was shot.
Following the incident, Matthew Bolen fled in Heaven's vehicle, sparking a manhunt that involved local law enforcement, the Arkansas Bloodhound Alliance, and an Arkansas State Police helicopter. The search concluded four days later when Matthew contacted an investigator to arrange his surrender. He was taken into custody at his father's home.
In October 2017, Matthew Jay Bolen pleaded guilty to first-degree murder, being a felon in possession of a firearm, and kidnapping. He admitted to handcuffing and shooting his estranged wife. A circuit court judge sentenced him to a total of 75 years in a state correctional facility, with consecutive sentences of 40 years for murder, 20 years for kidnapping, and 15 years for the firearm charge.
