In the early morning hours of October 4, 2018, the life of 41-year-old Freda Williams, a Black/African American mother and grandmother from Helena-West Helena, Arkansas, was tragically cut short. Williams was standing outside a neighbor's home on Cherry Street when she was fatally shot. The incident unfolded just blocks away from the lively King Biscuit Blues Festival.
Neighbors were startled by the sound of multiple gunshots, and soon after, Williams was discovered bleeding on the lawn. One resident of the area had a narrow escape when a bullet pierced through his bedroom window and headboard as he slept.
Investigators at the scene recovered two different types of shell casings, leading them to believe that at least two individuals were involved in the shooting and that an assault-style weapon may have been used. Despite the evidence collected, there have been no public reports of any arrests or the identification of any suspects in connection with the shooting death of Freda Williams. The case remains under investigation by local authorities.
