In the late hours of a Tuesday in Benton, Arkansas, a disturbance at a residence on Freeman Street prompted a call to the Benton Police Department. When officers arrived at the home on October 29, 2019, they discovered a tragic scene. Inside, they found the bodies of 26-year-old Mark Allen Talbert and his 23-year-old wife, Maegan Talbert. Both had sustained fatal gunshot wounds.
Mark, a United States Air Force veteran who was working as an insurance agent, was described by loved ones as
someone who was always smiling and strived to make everyone happy. He and Maegan were deeply in love and enjoyed a life filled with friends, family, cookouts, and trips. Their lives were cut short in what would be revealed as a domestic dispute turned deadly.
The investigation into the double homicide quickly focused on a family member also residing at the Freeman Street home. Mark's brother, Luke Talbert, then 29, became the sole suspect. The investigation revealed that Mark and Maegan had decided to ask Luke to move out of their home due to disapproval of his behavior. On the night of the incident, Luke had been drinking heavily and returned to the residence, leading to a confrontation.
Following the dispute, Luke Talbert retrieved a shotgun from his bedroom and shot both his brother and sister-in-law. He then contacted 911 and informed the operator of what he had done. When police arrived, Luke Talbert was taken into custody without incident and subsequently charged with two counts of first-degree murder.
In November 2021, seeking to spare the families the emotional toll of a trial, Luke Talbert, then 31, pleaded guilty to two counts of first-degree murder. A judge sentenced him to serve 50 years in the Arkansas Department of Correction for the murders of his brother, Mark, and his sister-in-law, Maegan.
