In what should have been a safe space, 11-year-old Jordan Mekhi Roberts, a Black male, tragically lost his life on May 1, 2020, in Little Rock, Arkansas. A student at Western Hills Elementary School, Jordan was known by his family as a 'lovable' child who found joy in playing video games and basketball. His life was cut short in a harrowing turn of events that unfolded within his own home.
The evening of his death, Jordan's mother, Maranda Alford, made a desperate call to the police,
reporting that her partner, 32-year-old Brent Martin, had barricaded himself inside their Karon Court residence with her son. When officers arrived at the scene around 7:00 PM, they attempted to make contact with Martin. Their attempts at communication were shattered by the sound of gunshots erupting from within the house.
Forced to make a split-second decision, officers breached the home. They were immediately met by gunfire from Martin. In the ensuing exchange, police returned fire, fatally wounding him. Inside the residence, they found young Jordan suffering from critical gunshot wounds. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, but tragically, his injuries proved to be fatal.
The investigation into the incident revealed a troubled history for Brent Martin, including prior arrests for domestic battery and drug-related offenses. The tragic loss of a young boy in his own home sent shockwaves through the Little Rock community, leaving behind a family to grieve the senseless death of a child whose life was taken far too soon. An internal investigation was launched by the Little Rock Police Department regarding the officer-involved shooting, with the involved officers placed on paid leave, a standard procedure in such cases.
