On a spring evening in Marion, Arkansas, the sounds of children playing filled the air in the Sherwood Cove area. Eight-year-old Ja’Myiah Hall was among them, enjoying a game with splatter ball toy guns on April 10, 2022. The innocent fun took a tragic turn when real gunfire suddenly rang out, causing the children to scatter in fear. When the chaos subsided, Ja’Myiah was found lying near a vehicle, having sustained a gunshot wound to her head.
She was rushed to a children's hospital in Memphis but tragically succumbed to her injuries.
The investigation into the young girl's death quickly identified a suspect. Witnesses reported that an altercation had broken out nearby, leading a woman to retrieve a handgun and fire it. The bullet ricocheted off a parked vehicle before striking Ja’Myiah, who was not the intended target. Law enforcement identified 24-year-old Shantia Nicole Montgomery as the individual who discharged the weapon. She was arrested and subsequently charged with first-degree murder, a terroristic act, and tampering with physical evidence.
In January 2023, a Crittenden County jury deliberated for less than an hour and a half before finding Shantia Montgomery, then 25, guilty on all counts. The jury recommended a sentence of 126 years in prison, a recommendation that the circuit judge accepted and implemented. Following the conviction, Ja’Myiah's father expressed his relief and gratitude, stating he could finally sleep peacefully knowing that justice had been served for his daughter.
