In the summer of 2022, a tragic incident in Helena, Arkansas, resulted in the death of 15-year-old Jayden Taylor-Campbell. On the evening of August 12, Jayden was at the Poplar Manor Apartments visiting his grandmother. What began as a seemingly innocent moment between best friends took a devastating turn. Inside a stairwell of the apartment building, Jayden was fatally shot.
The person responsible for the shooting was identified as Jayden's 16-year-old best friend.
According to police, the two teenagers were playing with a gun when it discharged, striking Jayden. The investigation revealed that the friend did not believe the firearm was loaded. In the immediate aftermath, the shocked teenager attempted to help his friend, flagging down a vehicle to get Jayden to the hospital before fleeing the scene.
Authorities later arrested the 16-year-old, who confessed to the shooting and turned over a 9mm Glock that had been modified with an extended magazine. He was subsequently charged with manslaughter and taken to a juvenile detention facility. Jayden's father, Demarius Campbell, remembered his son as a good student who was loved by his teachers and classmates and was active in his church. The devastating event left a family and community mourning the sudden and tragic loss of a young life.
