On September 12, 2011, 28-year-old Jameila Hesseltine was found deceased in her Omaha, Nebraska apartment, located near 20th Street and Ames Avenue. She had been shot and killed, and her two young sons discovered her body. Jameila was a mother to two sons, Jabaris and Jaemyn Hesseltine, and was survived by her father, Racine Porter; sister, Buffy Bush; brothers, Racine Porter Jr. and Ernest Kain; and other family members.
Jameila's death was ruled a homicide, and the case remains unsolved. Investigators believe that the killer or killers knew their victims, suggesting that this was not a random act of violence. Detective Sherry King, who responded to the scene, stated, 'This is not some random person that came into the house and executed both of these people.'
In the years following Jameila's death, her family has been actively seeking justice. They have organized events, including balloon releases and mural dedications, to honor her memory and keep the case in the public eye. In November 2021, a mural was dedicated in North Omaha featuring Jameila's face, among others, to remember unsolved murder victims.
Despite these efforts, no arrests have been made, and the case remains open. The Omaha Police Department continues to seek information from the public to help solve this case. Detective King emphasized the importance of community involvement, stating, 'Our hope is on each day. Maybe by posting that information out there and by media outlets talking about it, we can get information that might help break one of those cases open.'
Jameila's family continues to advocate for justice, urging anyone with information to come forward. Her sister, Buffy Bush, has been particularly vocal, expressing frustration over the lack of progress in the case and the silence of potential witnesses. She stated, 'These random strangers that can come and tell me who killed my sister... Y'all need to call the right people 911.'
As of now, the investigation into Jameila Hesseltine's death remains ongoing, with authorities urging anyone with information to contact the Omaha Police Department or Crime Stoppers.
