On January 8, 1901, Undersheriff Matthew B. DeVane of the Yuma County Sheriff's Office in Arizona was fatally shot while attempting to apprehend three individuals who had stolen a barrel of liquor from a local saloon. The incident occurred at the intersection of Main Street and 2nd Street in Yuma. As Undersheriff DeVane began to search the suspects, one of them drew a firearm and shot him, resulting in his immediate death.
