After being stopped by another individual who then used the quirt on him, the suspect was being placed under arrest by Constable Melick. In a sudden and violent turn of events, just as the Constable informed the man he was under arrest, the suspect drew a. 38 caliber revolver and fired, striking the officer three times.
The fatal encounter sent shockwaves through the community, but the pursuit of justice was swift. A manhunt for the perpetrator was launched, leading to his capture. Following his arrest, the suspect was tried and convicted for the murder of Constable Victor Hugo Melick. In the end, he faced the ultimate penalty for his crime and was hanged.
