In the quiet town of Fredonia, Arizona, a moment of tragic violence unfolded, claiming the life of Coconino County Deputy Sheriff James Michael 'Mike' Young. The 39-year-old, a dedicated lawman with over a year of service to the county and previous experience with multiple other Arizona law enforcement agencies, was fatally shot while attempting to serve an arrest warrant.
On that fateful morning, Deputy Young, along with two other officers, entered a residence to execute the warrant. As they proceeded down a hallway, a male suspect emerged from a room, initiating a sudden and intense exchange of gunfire. In the ensuing chaos, twelve shots were fired in rapid succession. Deputy Young was struck four times. Despite his grievous injuries, he managed to return fire, hitting the suspect four times as well.
The violent encounter left both Deputy Young and the suspect dead at the scene. Another deputy sustained injuries during the shootout but survived. The suspect, whose actions prompted the deadly confrontation, was killed in the exchange of gunfire, and therefore no arrests were made in connection to Deputy Young's death.
Deputy Sheriff Mike Young was a man committed to public service, having also served with the Metropolitan Police Department in Washington, D.C., the Coolidge Police Department, and the Yavapai County Sheriff's Department. His unexpected death left behind a wife and two daughters from a previous marriage, as well as his father, sister, and four brothers. In a lasting tribute to his sacrifice, the fire department in Black Canyon City, Arizona, was named The Mike Young Memorial Fire Department in his honor.
