In the quiet community of Addis, Louisiana, a grim discovery shattered the December air of 2024. The body of 18-year-old JaMorius Mitchell, a Black/African American male, was found in a sugarcane field on December 18th, six days after he was reported missing from nearby Plaquemine. The unsettling find was made by a farmer who noticed an unusual fire in a field off Sid Richardson Road and went to investigate.
What he stumbled upon would launch a homicide investigation that would grip the local community.
JaMorius had last been seen on December 12th, and his mother's growing concern prompted a search by the Plaquemine Police Department. Friends and family described him as a beloved son, brother, and a great friend, whose life was tragically cut short. His sudden disappearance was out of character, as he was known to be reliable in keeping in touch with his mother. The discovery of his body, badly burned and concealed in a drainage ditch beneath the sugarcane, confirmed the worst fears of his loved ones and the authorities who suspected foul play from early on. An autopsy later revealed that he had sustained two gunshot wounds.
The investigation into JaMorius Mitchell's death quickly led to suspects. Within days, the West Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office announced the arrests of three individuals. Eighteen-year-old Tyler Davis was identified as the primary suspect, accused of shooting Mitchell twice from behind with an AR-15 style pistol. Investigators believe a dispute over a cellphone may have been the motive for the killing. According to authorities, Davis, Mitchell, and two others had driven to the location where the body was later found. After the shooting, Davis and the others allegedly dragged Mitchell's body into the field, concealing it under the sugarcane. It is believed that Davis later returned to the scene to set the area on fire in an attempt to destroy evidence.
Also taken into custody in connection with the crime were 23-year-old Devonte Johnson and another 18-year-old, Sterling Powell.
