On a Wednesday morning in Columbus, Georgia, the life of a teenager was cut short by gunfire. On December 18, 2024, police were called to the 1100 block of Celia Drive around 8:15 a.m. for a reported shooting. There, they found Elijah Hatcher, a 15-year-old Black male, suffering from gunshot wounds. Paramedics rushed him to the Piedmont Columbus Regional emergency room, but his injuries were too severe.
Elijah was pronounced dead by a doctor at 9:15 a.m.
Elijah’s mother later described the profound loss her family endured. She spoke of her son's empty room, now cold without him, and of his siblings who would never see their brother again. In court, she called her son's killing "cruel and evil" and "unnecessary," expressing her anguish over the violence in the community. “This irrelevant, unnecessary killings for nothing that don’t matter needs to stop,” she said.
The Columbus Police Department’s investigation led to a swift arrest. Citing eyewitnesses and video evidence, investigators took Jeremiah West into custody on Thursday, December 19, the day after the shooting. He was charged with Murder and Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Crime.
West appeared for a preliminary hearing in Recorder's Court on Monday, December 23, 2024. During the proceeding, his attorney argued there were probable causes that led to the shooting. After hearing from both sides, the judge ordered West to be held without bond. The case was bound over to Superior Court for further proceedings. As of December 2024, Jeremiah West remained in custody awaiting his next court date.
