On December 2, 2024, 40-year-old Mihail Tsvetkov was fatally shot in a road rage incident on East Colonial Drive in Orlando, Florida. Tsvetkov, a professor with a Ph.D. in German linguistics, had recently accepted a university position in Illinois and was preparing to relocate to be closer to his family.
According to the Orlando Police Department, the confrontation began when a woman tailgated Tsvetkov's vehicle.
Witnesses reported that Tsvetkov exited his car to address the situation calmly, without shouting or displaying aggression. Despite his non-confrontational approach, the woman drew a firearm and shot him.
In the aftermath, Jennifer Garcia, a nurse anesthetist who was passing by, stopped to provide assistance. She found Tsvetkov with a pulse initially, but he succumbed to his injuries shortly thereafter. Garcia expressed her hope that her efforts provided some comfort to Tsvetkov's family, emphasizing the tragedy of such an event occurring during busy morning hours.
Tsvetkov's sister, Daniela Cvetkova, described the profound impact of his death on their family, recalling the unbearable moment their mother learned of his passing.
