Russo's death came in the wake of his arrest earlier that month on serious charges. On December 11, 2024, he was apprehended at the Smith Correctional Facility in Banning, where he had been employed in the corrections division. The arrest stemmed from an undercover operation conducted by the Riverside County Sheriff's Special Investigations Bureau, which had received a tip about Russo's alleged criminal activities.
During the investigation, an undercover investigator posing as a 15-year-old minor engaged in online communication with Russo. According to the sheriff's department, Russo shared explicit content and expressed his intention to meet with the supposed minor for sexual encounters. As a result of these actions, Russo was initially booked on two felony counts.
Following his arrest, Russo was released on a $50,000 bail. The Riverside County District Attorney's Office subsequently charged him with one felony count of knowingly distributing harmful material. In light of the allegations, Russo resigned from his position in the sheriff's office.
