On February 7, 2023, 31-year-old Jade Talia Guajardo of Pflugerville, Texas, tragically lost her life in a domestic violence incident involving her ex-boyfriend, 31-year-old Davonte Fox. The sequence of events began around 1:14 p.m. when Guajardo contacted the Austin Police Department (APD), reporting that after she had dropped off Fox at a residence on Sweet Melissa Drive in North Austin, he flattened her tire as she attempted to leave.
Officers responded to the scene, spoke with Guajardo, and provided her with a ride, allowing her to depart safely.
Later that day, at approximately 2:37 p.m., APD officers spoke with Guajardo over the phone; she was at a different location, and Fox's whereabouts were unknown at that time. By 7:54 p.m., officers were dispatched again to the residence on Sweet Melissa Drive following reports of another disturbance involving Fox. Upon arrival, they determined that Guajardo had returned to the residence and was being held hostage by Fox. The APD SWAT team was deployed to the scene, and after prolonged negotiations, they forcibly entered the home at 12:14 a.m. on February 8. Inside, they found both Guajardo and Fox in an upstairs room, each suffering from gunshot wounds. Guajardo was pronounced dead at the scene, while Fox was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Detectives concluded that Fox had fatally shot Guajardo before attempting to take his own life. Subsequently, on February 10, 2023, Fox succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead. This tragic incident marked the 11th homicide in Austin for the year 2023.
In the wake of this tragedy, Guajardo's family and friends remembered her as a loving mother to her two sons, Elijah and Christian. Born on November 5, 1991, in Georgetown, Texas, she was raised by her mother, Yolanda Guzman, and stepfather, Marlon Guzman. Jade's upbringing included time in Honolulu, Hawaii, and Pleasanton, California, before returning to Austin, Texas, where she graduated from Bowie High School in 2009. Her family fondly recalled her love for travel, her radiant smile, and her enjoyment of card games like Phase 10 and Thirty-one.
