On March 21, 2023, 55-year-old Khudhair Hamdan of Arlington, Texas, was fatally shot while assisting a family member in selling a car through a social media platform. Hamdan had arranged to meet two potential buyers for a test drive of the vehicle, a purple Dodge Charger. The meeting took place at his residence in the 700 block of Port Richmond Way. During the test drive, as they proceeded along Port Richmond Way, one of the suspects allegedly produced a firearm and shot Hamdan.
He exited the vehicle and collapsed in the roadway, where neighbors later found him unresponsive. Emergency services transported him to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead from his injuries.
Following the shooting, the suspects abandoned the Dodge Charger behind a shopping center near the intersection of Matlock Road and Sublett Road. Surveillance footage from the area captured images of the two individuals leaving the vehicle and departing the scene. The Arlington Police Department initiated an investigation, utilizing video evidence, witness statements, and cellphone records to identify the suspects. Their efforts led to the apprehension of 18-year-old Luis Gutierrez and 19-year-old Cristian Saucedo, both residents of Dallas. Gutierrez was already in custody for an unrelated case in Dallas, while Saucedo was arrested at his home by members of the U.S. Marshals North Texas Fugitive Task Force. Both individuals have been charged with capital murder in connection with Hamdan's death.
Hamdan, originally from Iraq, had relocated to the United States with his family in pursuit of better educational opportunities for his children. His death has left his family and the local community in profound grief. Arlington Police Chief Al Jones expressed condolences, stating, "Mr. Hamdan was simply trying to help a relative sell a car – and now his family’s entire world has been turned upside down." He further emphasized the department's commitment to removing violent offenders from the streets to prevent such tragedies.
In the wake of this incident, authorities have advised community members engaging in online marketplaces to utilize designated safe zones at local police stations for transactions, aiming to enhance safety and prevent similar occurrences in the future.
