On April 4, 2023, in Arlington, Texas, two-year-old Rio Christopher Carrington tragically lost his life after accidentally shooting himself with a firearm he found in his teenage brother's room. The incident occurred around 12:30 a.m. at the family's residence on Pocassett Drive. Emergency responders arrived to find Rio with a gunshot wound to his face; he was transported to Medical City Arlington Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Investigators determined that Rio had discovered the unsecured firearm in his brother's room and accidentally discharged it. Two firearms were recovered from the home, both believed to belong to the teenage brother. Authorities are investigating how the teenager acquired the weapons.
In response to the incident, Arlington police arrested the teenage brother, charging him with making a firearm accessible to a child resulting in death and tampering with physical evidence. Due to his status as a juvenile, his identity has not been disclosed. He is currently held at the Tarrant County Juvenile Detention Center.
