On April 6, 2023, at approximately 11:45 p.m., 33-year-old Edwin Arevalo was fatally shot following a minor traffic collision in Houston, Texas. Arevalo was driving a Toyota Yaris northbound near the 13000 block of Hiram Clarke Road when he collided with a white Lexus sedan. The driver of the Lexus exited his vehicle, approached Arevalo, and fired multiple shots into the Toyota, resulting in Arevalo's death. The suspect then fled the scene in the Lexus.
Through surveillance footage and investigative efforts, Houston Police Department (HPD) detectives identified the suspect as 46-year-old Lydell Grant. Grant was located at a nearby residence and taken into custody without incident by HPD SWAT and the Southwest Patrol Division Crime Suppression Teams on April 7, 2023. He was subsequently charged with murder in the 337th State District Court.
Notably, Grant had a prior history with the criminal justice system. In 2012, he was convicted of the 2010 fatal stabbing of Aaron Scheerhoorn outside a Houston bar, based on eyewitness testimonies. However, in May 2021, the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals declared Grant innocent after DNA evidence and a confession from the actual perpetrator, Jermarico Carter, exonerated him. Grant had served seven years of a life sentence before his release in 2019 pending the court's decision.
Following his exoneration, Grant's recent arrest in connection with Arevalo's death has garnered significant attention. The Innocence Project of Texas, which had advocated for Grant's previous exoneration, expressed condolences to the victim's family but refrained from commenting on the specifics of the ongoing investigation. Grant remains in custody with bond set at $1 million as the legal process unfolds.
