On April 10, 2023, a tragic incident unfolded in Murphy, Texas, resulting in the deaths of 57-year-old Tracy Kay Cantu and her husband, 63-year-old Federico (Fred) Cantu Jr. The couple was found deceased at their residence on Whisperfield Drive in the Rolling Ridge subdivision. Tracy was discovered in the driveway, while Federico was found inside the home.
The perpetrator was identified as 35-year-old Vincent Cantu, Federico's son and Tracy's stepson.
Vincent arrived at the residence shortly after 6 p.m., accompanied by another individual, 28-year-old Cristian Andres Bocanegra. Upon arrival, Vincent attacked his father and stepmother with several weapons, inflicting fatal injuries on both. After the assault, Vincent turned one of the weapons on himself, sustaining a critical gunshot wound to the head. He was transported to Medical City Plano, where he was later pronounced dead.
Initially, Bocanegra cooperated with law enforcement during the investigation. However, after extensive investigative work, Murphy Police arrested him on May 5, 2023, charging him with capital murder of multiple persons for his role in the deaths of Tracy and Federico Cantu. Bocanegra was booked into the Collin County Jail on a $1 million bond. The motive behind the attack remains unclear, and the investigation is ongoing.
This tragic event has left the community in mourning, as friends and neighbors remember Tracy and Federico for their kindness and the positive impact they had on those around them. A memorial service was held on April 18, 2023, to honor their lives and legacy.
