On April 28, 2023, in Cleveland, Texas, 18-year-old Jose Jonathan Casarez was among five individuals fatally shot in a tragic incident. The victims, all from Honduras, were identified as Sonia Argentina Guzman, 25; Diana Velazquez Alvarado, 21; Julisa Molina Rivera, 31; Jose Jonathan Casarez, 18; and Daniel Enrique Laso, 9. Authorities reported that some victims were found shielding children, with two women discovered lying on top of surviving children in a bedroom. The assailant targeted his victims with shots to the neck and head, described by officials as "execution style."
Following the shooting, a manhunt ensued for Oropeza, who fled the scene. He was apprehended on May 2, 2023, in Cut and Shoot, Texas, found hiding under a pile of laundry in a closet. Oropeza was charged with five counts of first-degree murder, with bond set at $7.5 million. Additionally, his partner, Divimara Lamar Nava, was arrested and charged with hindering his apprehension, accused of assisting him in evading capture. Another individual, identified as a friend of Oropeza, was also arrested on charges related to aiding his evasion.
