On May 21, 2023, 21-year-old Moses Jonathan Gama from Spring, Texas, was fatally shot during an attempted robbery in west Houston. Gama had arranged to purchase a PlayStation console as a birthday gift for his 2-year-old son and had driven to The Post Oak at Woodway apartments, accompanied by his wife and child, to meet the seller. Upon exiting his vehicle to complete the transaction, he was confronted by individuals who attempted to rob him, resulting in Gama being shot multiple times.
His wife, who remained in the car, heard the gunshots and discovered her husband lying on the ground. Gama was transported to Ben Taub General Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
In the aftermath of the tragedy, Gama's family expressed profound grief over the loss of a kind and fun-loving individual who was an avid gamer and devoted father. They emphasized the importance of conducting such transactions in safe, public settings to prevent similar incidents. Funeral services for Gama were held shortly after his death, with his family and community mourning the untimely loss.
Following an investigation, authorities identified a juvenile male suspect in connection with Gama's death. On August 28, 2023, the 16-year-old suspect surrendered to police and was subsequently charged with capital murder. Due to the suspect's age, his identity and booking photos have not been released publicly. He was referred to Harris County Juvenile Probation authorities and booked into the Harris County Juvenile Justice Center.
The arrest brought a measure of relief to Gama's family, who had been seeking justice for his untimely death. They continue to advocate for safety awareness during private transactions to prevent such tragedies from occurring in the future. The case underscores the potential dangers associated with private sales and the importance of exercising caution when engaging in such activities.
