On May 26, 2023, 17-year-old Derek Valdez was found fatally shot at the Bayou Palms Apartments, located at 13455 Woodforest Boulevard in Houston, Texas. Harris County Sheriff's deputies responded to reports of a shooting and discovered Valdez with a gunshot wound; he was pronounced dead at the scene.
