On May 27, 2023, 43-year-old Hector Torres, an Uber driver in Houston, Texas, was fatally shot during a robbery. Responding to a call in the 2900 block of Trail Lake Drive, Houston police found Torres with multiple gunshot wounds. Before losing consciousness, he informed officers that he had been robbed while providing an Uber ride. Torres was transported to Memorial Hermann Hospital, where he was pronounced dead two days later.
Investigators discovered Torres' vehicle abandoned nearby on Knotty Oaks Trail. Through Uber's records, they identified that the ride request had been made using an account belonging to an individual who was incarcerated at the time of the incident. This led authorities to conclude that someone else had accessed the account to request the ride. Further analysis of Uber and cell phone data traced the phone used for the request to a residence associated with 18-year-old Charles Anthony Hudson. Hudson had previously been arrested in January 2023 and was found in possession of the iPhone 12 used to request the Uber ride.
On July 5, 2023, Hudson was arrested and charged with capital murder in connection with Torres' death. During a court appearance, his bond was set at $750,000. If convicted, Hudson faces the possibility of life imprisonment or the death penalty.
This tragic incident highlights the dangers faced by rideshare drivers and underscores the importance of safety measures within the industry. Uber has stated that they are in close contact with law enforcement and are committed to investing in critical safety features to protect their drivers.
