On June 17, 2023, 50-year-old Darrell Lee Childers of Keene, Texas, was fatally shot outside a residence in the 5900 block of County Road 308, southeast of Cleburne. Johnson County sheriff’s deputies responded to the scene around 5 a.m., where they found Childers unresponsive. Despite first responders' efforts to administer life-saving measures, Childers was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to a statement from Childers' stepdaughter, Sarah Scott, the family believes that Childers was "murdered in cold blood by his 'best friends'" and that he was "shot 6 times." Scott also mentioned that the case is under investigation and expressed the family's determination to seek justice for Childers.
As of now, there have been no public reports detailing any arrests or identification of suspects related to Childers' death. The Johnson County Sheriff's Department continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting. A visitation was held on June 22, 2023, at Galbreaith Pickard Funeral Chapel in Weatherford, Texas, followed by a funeral service on June 23, 2023, at Spring Creek Baptist Church.
