On June 29, 2023, 43-year-old Laura West was tragically murdered in her home in Leming, Texas, approximately 30 miles south of San Antonio. Her roommate, 33-year-old Mary Heinz, was also killed in the same incident. The perpetrator, 27-year-old Rosendo Jesus Montoya, had previously dated Heinz and had developed an obsessive fixation on her.

In the early hours of that day, authorities responded to reports of a house fire at West's residence on Peach Street. Upon extinguishing the flames, firefighters discovered West's body; she had been fatally shot in the head. Heinz was initially unaccounted for, though her personal belongings and vehicle remained at the scene, raising immediate concerns about her safety.

Investigators swiftly identified Montoya as a suspect, noting his prior relationship with Heinz and his escalating obsession following their brief involvement. Surveillance operations led to Montoya's apprehension after he was observed disposing of black plastic bags containing partial human remains into a dumpster near his workplace in Pleasanton. Under interrogation, Montoya confessed to the murders of both women and directed authorities to Heinz's remains, which he had discarded along a roadside near Poteet.

Montoya had legally purchased a 9mm handgun in the month preceding the murders, indicating premeditation. He broke into the women's home, fatally shot West upon encountering her, and subsequently abducted and killed Heinz. In an attempt to conceal his crimes, Montoya set fire to the residence, aiming to destroy evidence; however, the fire was contained before it could obliterate the crime scene.

In July 2024, Montoya pleaded guilty to capital murder charges and was sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole. This plea agreement spared the victims' families the ordeal of a protracted trial and ensured that Montoya would remain incarcerated for the remainder of his life.

Laura West is remembered by her community as a loving mother and friend. Her untimely death, alongside that of her roommate, has left a profound void among family and friends, who continue to mourn their loss and seek solace in the memories of their loved ones.
