Cindy Camarillo, a 38-year-old mother, tragically lost her life on July 20, 2023, in Houston, Texas. The incident occurred around 9:45 PM outside her home in the Trinity Gardens neighborhood, near Sandra Street and Weaver Road. Camarillo and her family had only recently moved into this residence a few weeks prior to the fatal shooting.
According to reports, Camarillo's 14-year-old son was in his room playing video games when he heard what he initially thought was playful conversation
between his mother and her boyfriend. As the voices grew louder, the son became concerned. Moments later, he heard a loud bang and rushed outside, where he found his mother unresponsive. The teenager attempted to perform CPR, but sadly, Camarillo was pronounced dead at the scene.
The suspect in this case is Santiago Vallejo, 39, who was Camarillo's boyfriend at the time. When police arrived at the scene, they found Vallejo outside with his hands up, repeatedly saying, "I did it, I did it." He was immediately arrested and later charged with Camarillo's murder.
Authorities believe that jealousy may have been the motive behind this senseless act of violence. Vallejo was given a $250,000 bond, and his arrangement was set for September 13, 2023.
The victim's mother, Maria Guzman, described Camarillo as an excellent and caring mother. She was Guzman's only daughter, and her loss has devastated the family. Guzman has called for prayers and is hoping that the justice system will prosecute Vallejo to the fullest extent of the law.
In the wake of this tragedy, Camarillo's loved ones held a prayer vigil on July 25, 2023, outside the home where she was killed. Dozens of candles were lit as family and friends gathered to remember Camarillo and to lobby for keeping the accused killer off the streets. One family friend, Sergio Vasquez, spoke about the far-reaching impact of Camarillo's death, stating that the ripple effects would extend through the community and echo through time for those closest to her.
Camarillo's viewing was held on July 26, 2023, with the burial following on July 27. The family set up a GoFundMe page to help with expenses related to her funeral and to support her children.
This tragic event has brought attention to the issue of domestic violence in the Houston area and has left a community mourning the loss of a beloved mother, daughter, and friend.
