On July 27, 2023, 17-year-old Camo Lee Morton was found deceased from an apparent gunshot wound at a residence in Timpson, Texas. Law enforcement responded promptly to the scene, and an inquest was performed by Shelby County Precinct 5 Justice of the Peace Tracy Broadway, who ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
The investigation led to the arrest of two individuals: 18-year-old Denim Smith of Timpson and a juvenile, both charged with murder in connection with Morton's death. Subsequently, on October 5, 2023, a Shelby County Grand Jury indicted Smith for first-degree felony murder, alleging that he caused Morton's death by shooting him in the head.
Further developments occurred on November 13, 2024, when the Shelby County Sheriff's Department arrested 18-year-old Madisyn Ramsey of Tenaha on a charge of first-degree felony murder related to Morton's death.
According to Shelby County Jail booking information, Ramsey's bond was set at $150,000, and she was released on November 14, 2024. Additional details regarding her alleged involvement have not been disclosed by the authorities.
Morton's passing deeply affected the Timpson community. Born on December 13, 2005, in Shreveport, Louisiana, to Cheyenne Morton, Camo was remembered as an exceptional person and student at Gary ISD and Timpson ISD. He had a passion for hunting, fishing, playing guitar, and spending time with friends. His funeral services were held on August 3, 2023, at Hopewell Missionary Baptist Church in Gary, Texas, followed by interment at Corinth Cemetery in Timpson.
As of now, the legal proceedings concerning the individuals charged in connection with Morton's death are ongoing. The community continues to mourn the loss of a young life taken prematurely under tragic circumstances.
