On August 15, 2023, 46-year-old Anthony "Tony" Turgeon was fatally shot at his workplace, Vato Loco Tattoo Studio, located at Cooper and Division Street in Arlington, Texas. The incident occurred shortly after Turgeon was terminated from his position by the shop's owner, 42-year-old Javier Arredondo. Following the dismissal, Turgeon reportedly demanded his final paycheck and became agitated, shaking a display case and knocking items off the counter.
Employees present were instructed to leave the premises, during which they heard three gunshots.
Arredondo contacted 911, stating that he had just fired Turgeon, who refused to leave the establishment. He claimed to have acted in self-defense, expressing fear during the confrontation. However, he also admitted to preemptively loading a firearm and concealing it under the counter prior to Turgeon's arrival. Investigators found no evidence that Turgeon was armed or had attempted to assault Arredondo. Despite multiple opportunities to elaborate on his fear, Arredondo could not provide justification for the use of deadly force. After consulting with the Tarrant County District Attorney's Office, detectives concluded that the shooting was not legally justified. Consequently, Arredondo was arrested at the scene and charged with murder.
Turgeon's passing elicited profound grief among his family and friends. Described as having a vibrant spirit and a deep love for the outdoors, he was known for his warm smile and ability to connect with others effortlessly. He is survived by his parents, children, siblings, and significant other. A visitation and Celebration of Life were held on August 24, 2023, at Azle & Lake Worth Funeral Home Chapel, followed by interment at Azleland Cemetery & Memorial Park.
The tragic circumstances surrounding Turgeon's death have left a lasting impact on the Arlington community, highlighting the devastating consequences of workplace conflicts escalating to violence.
