On October 6, 2023, at approximately 10:46 a.m., the Hill County Sheriff's Office received a 911 call reporting a man lying in the roadway in the 100 block of Bluegrass Street, near Whitney, Texas. Upon arrival, deputies discovered the body of 46-year-old Cory Shelton, who had suffered fatal gunshot wounds.
Witnesses at the scene reported seeing a newer model black pickup truck speeding away, occupied by two males and a female.
Acting on this information, deputies swiftly located one male suspect at a convenience store at the intersection of Farm Roads 933 and 2604, taking him into custody without incident.
Later that afternoon, around 2:26 p.m., a female matching the description of the second suspect was found sitting on a bench in the 900 block of South Bosque Street in Whitney. Whitney Police officers confirmed her identity and arrested her on an outstanding warrant for a parole violation.
The investigation led authorities to the 200 block of Ash Ridge, where they discovered the black pickup truck concealed. Further leads directed them to a nearby recreational vehicle, where the third suspect, 31-year-old Charlie Harris of Longview, was located. Harris, found armed, initially refused to surrender, expressing intentions to "shoot it out with deputies." After negotiations by the Hill County Crisis Negotiations Team, he surrendered peacefully at 6:37 p.m. Harris was subsequently charged with murder and booked into the Hill County Jail.
As of the latest reports, the identities of the other two individuals involved have not been released, pending the filing of additional charges. The investigation remains ongoing, with multiple law enforcement agencies, including the Texas Department of Public Safety and neighboring county sheriff's offices, assisting in the case.
