Buckley, whose mother had previous ties to the church, reportedly approached a member and ominously stated, "Today is going to be the day," referencing the pastor. As deputies were en route, Buckley fled the scene. A church member, also a Texas EquuSearch volunteer, was informed of the situation and went to the parking lot. Upon arrival, Buckley allegedly charged at him, leading the church member to discharge his firearm twice, fatally wounding Buckley. Approximately 50 to 70 congregants were present during the incident, but no additional injuries were reported.
Investigations revealed that Buckley had been arrested the previous day for criminal mischief, involving an incident where he reportedly thrust a sword through a trailer. Authorities also discovered psychotropic medications in his vehicle at the church scene, suggesting potential mental health issues.
In the aftermath, Lake Houston Methodist Church released a statement requesting prayers for all parties involved and cautioning against the spread of misinformation. They emphasized the importance of relying on reputable news sources for information regarding the incident.
Buckley was born on January 22, 1981, in Houston, Texas. He served in both the Navy and the Army and worked as a Texas State Inspector for Copperfield Goodyear from 2020 to 2023. He is survived by his wife, Vanessa, his parents, and siblings. A service with military honors was held on December 11, 2023, at Houston National Cemetery.
