On December 9, 2023, the body of 51-year-old Pete Gonzales Eguia was discovered in a wooded area off Escondido Road near Helotes, Texas. A passerby noticed a discarded shoe on the roadside and, upon investigating, found Eguia's body, which exhibited signs of slight decomposition and evidence of dragging. The Bexar County Medical Examiner determined that Eguia had died from multiple gunshot wounds, leading the Bexar County Sheriff's Office (BCSO) to investigate the case as a homicide.

guia, a resident of San Marcos, Texas, had been reported missing by his family on December 9, the same day his body was found. Family members last communicated with him on December 1, after which attempts to reach him were unsuccessful. A welfare check conducted by San Marcos Police at his apartment found it unlocked but undisturbed. Notably, Eguia's 2017 Nissan was located on December 7 with front-end damage along Apache Canyon, approximately 23 miles from where his body was discovered. Neighbors reported last seeing his vehicle on November 30.
Eguia's family described him as a caring father of two and a loving grandfather. His sister, Deborah Pesina, emphasized his significance beyond being a victim, stating, "He was a dad, he was a brother, he was an uncle, he was a grandfather, and he was someone’s son." The family has expressed devastation over his death and is pleading for anyone with information to come forward to aid in the investigation.
As of December 27, 2024, no arrests have been made in connection with Eguia's death. The BCSO continues to seek information from the public to identify and apprehend the individual(s) responsible. Sheriff Javier Salazar stated, "We’re not going to stop looking until we find whoever did this."
