On December 29, 2023, at approximately 4:40 a.m., Dallas police responded to a shooting in the 3100 block of Harry Hines Boulevard in the Oak Lawn neighborhood. Upon arrival, officers discovered two 14-year-old boys suffering from gunshot wounds. Both were transported to Parkland Memorial Hospital, where one of the victims, identified as Ah-bralen Rider, succumbed to his injuries on December 31. The other teenager was treated and is expected to recover.
A 16-year-old male suspect was arrested in connection with the shooting. Initially charged with two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, one of these charges was later upgraded to manslaughter following Rider's death. Due to the suspect's age, authorities have withheld his identity. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting remains ongoing.
Tragically, this incident was the first of two devastating losses for Rider's family within a short period. On January 10, 2024, while Rider's mother was at a funeral home making arrangements for her son's service, her 6-year-old daughter, Ah’Laynah Modica-Ross, was fatally shot at their home in Old East Dallas. A 19-year-old family acquaintance, Damariya Sowels, was arrested and charged with tampering with evidence in connection with the incident. Sowels admitted to bringing firearms into the home and attempting to conceal them after the shooting. The exact circumstances of how Ah’Laynah was shot are still under investigation.
The Rider family's back-to-back tragedies have highlighted concerns about gun violence and the safety of unsecured firearms in households. Community members and local authorities continue to emphasize the importance of responsible gun ownership to prevent such heartbreaking incidents in the future.
