On January 24, 2024, at approximately 11 p.m., Amarillo police officers responded to a reported shooting at a residence in the 800 block of North Highland. Upon arrival, they discovered 23-year-old Everardo Guadalupe Leal Jr. suffering from a gunshot wound. Despite immediate life-saving efforts, Leal was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency personnel.
Shortly thereafter, officers were dispatched to another shooting incident in the 800 block of North Apache, where they found a second male victim with multiple gunshot wounds. This individual was transported to a local hospital in critical but stable condition. Investigators determined that both shootings were connected and stemmed from an altercation that had occurred earlier that evening, around 10 p.m., at the Walmart on Grand Street.
Following a thorough investigation, Amarillo Police Department homicide detectives obtained indictments for two suspects. On April 29, 2024, 22-year-old Isaac Arthur Botello was indicted on a charge of murder, and 22-year-old Jorge Fabian Cabello faced indictments for murder and aggravated perjury. Both individuals were arrested and booked into the Potter County Jail.
Subsequently, on May 23, 2024, a Potter County Grand Jury formally indicted Botello and Cabello on murder charges related to Leal's death. The indictments allege that both men knowingly caused Leal's death by shooting him. The case remains under investigation as authorities continue to gather evidence and prepare for the forthcoming legal proceedings.
