On February 10, 2024, at approximately 7:15 p.m., 17-year-old Marcos Villanueva was fatally shot while working at a Church's Chicken restaurant located in the 4600 block of Scyene Road in Dallas, Texas. According to witnesses, a man entered the establishment, specifically asked for Villanueva by name, and upon his approach to the front counter, the assailant drew a handgun and shot him multiple times. The shooter then fled the scene on foot.
Despite prompt arrival and life-saving efforts by Dallas Fire Rescue, Villanueva succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
The Dallas Police Department launched an intensive investigation into the homicide. Detectives canvassed the area for surveillance footage and eyewitness accounts. They discovered video evidence showing a man matching the suspect's description—wearing a burnt orange hoodie, dark-colored pants, and white flip-flops—near the crime scene. Further examination of body camera footage from an unrelated incident on February 2 revealed an individual resembling the suspect, who had previously identified himself to police as Jeremy Grant.
An eyewitness to the shooting later identified Grant in a photographic lineup as the individual who shot Villanueva. Based on this identification and corroborating evidence, authorities obtained a warrant for Grant's arrest. On February 19, 2024, 23-year-old Jeremy Grant was apprehended and charged with murder. He was booked into the Dallas County Jail, with bond set at $1.25 million.
